This thread concerns current events in the light of biblical prophecy and so this post may appear to be slightly off topic, but given that sometimes prophecy has a gradual revelation, having current topics and tracking christian issues may give us biblical insight into God's plans for the world and his people. To help get things kicked I humbly submit the following news item.
Has anyone been following the firestorm surrounding President-elect Barack Obama's invitation to pastor Rick Warren for him to give the invocation at the Jan. 20 inauguration? The 54-year-old pastor and founder of Saddleback Church in Southern California is under fire for opposing gay marriage, a political hot potato especially in California.
Obama's choice of Warren has flared up an outcry from gay rights and other liberal groups, who said choosing such an outspoken opponent of gay marriage was tantamount to endorsing bigotry. He defended his choice on Thursday, saying that he has also invited a Methodist minister and civil rights leader, Joseph Lowery, who supports same-sex marriage and gay rights to deliver the benediction.
Although Warren has said that he has nothing personally against gays, he has condemned same-sex marriage. He defends his position and suggests that, “No church has probably done more for people with AIDS than Saddleback Church."
All I can say now is that this administration is getting off the ground with a bang and I suspect that we will see a lot of Church versus State stories in the next four years being set in the frame work of the criticism from all sides for the choices that Barack Obama makes.
Whether any of this administration's actions play into biblical prophecy is up to history to determine. We will be watching closely for the signs as Christ tells us.
