What is a false god? Here is how you can know:

Deuteronomy 32:

15 “But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked;
you grew fat, stout, and sleek;
then he forsook God who made him
and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.
16 They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods;
with abominations they provoked him to anger.
17 They sacrificed to demons that were no gods,
to gods they had never known,

to new gods that had come recently,
whom your fathers had never dreaded.
18 You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you,
and you forgot the God who gave you birth...

21 They have made me jealous with what is no god;
they have provoked me to anger with their idols.

So I will make them jealous with those who are no people;
I will provoke them to anger with e a foolish nation.
22 For a fire is kindled by my anger,
and it burns to the depths of Sheol,
devours the earth and its increase,
and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

(Jeshurun means "the upright one", a poetic name for Israel used sarcastically here)

All other supposed "gods" used in this context are false - at best the imaginings of men... at worst demons impersonating gods in some fashion.
All other supposed gods aren't a really a "god" at all, but a falsehood of some sort. Being such, all false gods are idols and all things that we are idolatrous to are false gods, whether they are called a god or not.

Who is the true God?

Deuteronomy 6: 4
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."

Isaiah 44:
1 “But now hear, O Jacob my servant,
Israel whom I have chosen!
2 Thus says the Lord who made you,
who formed you from the womb and will help you:
Fear not, O Jacob my servant,
Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring,
and my blessing on your descendants.
4 They shall spring up among the grass
like willows by flowing streams.
5 This one will say, ‘I am the Lord's,’
another will call on the name of Jacob,
and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord's,’
and name himself by the name of Israel.”
Besides Me There Is No God

6 Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel
and i his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
“I am the first and I am the last;
besides me there is no god.
7 Who is like me? Let him proclaim it.
Let him declare and set it before me,
since I appointed an ancient people.
Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen.
8 Fear not, nor be afraid;
have I not told you from of old and declared it?
And you are my witnesses!
Is there a God besides me?
There is no Rock; I know not any.”

Sh'ma Yis'ra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad.
Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One!

I just discovered this whopper of an unsupported statement in an article I was reading online:

Biblical scholars agree that the ancient Jews believed in many gods, but chose to worship only one. To identify the power(s) that formed the Universe, the ancient scripture uses a word with no synonym in the English language. It can be pronounced elohim or alhim but is difficult to translate, because it is both singular and plural.

www.24-7pressrelease.com/press-release/f...tiple-gods-96762.php

If anyone did a word search for "gods" then found out that the word was "elohim" and what passages used it and the ways it is used, they would never say that the "ancient Jews" believed in many gods, but chose to worship only one"

This is another reason to study for yourself and not just take everything that you read as true.
Notice there is not a single Scripture reference in this article making assertions about the Bible!

"This is another reason to study for yourself and not just take everything that you read as true."

Last evening I posted the simple original question. I was tired and being lazy when I decided not to proof-read my words... just hit the submit link. After it was posted, I read my errors in disbelief!

My original question arose while I was reading Psalms. [I don't much enjoy reading this book, for the most part, because it just usually seems too dramatic and corny for my taste. Maybe set to music, it'd speak to me like much of today's contemporary Christian music that can very quickly inspire me to into an wonderful worship mode as I take my daily walk.] I was feeling a little impatient and slightly bent out of shape already and thought I'd just throw out a silly little question... probably just looking for a temporary distraction.

I've asked some BIG questions that haven't even been replied to by anybody on this site. Questions with which I REALLY wanted to wrestle and be exposed to more intelligent ideas. Questions that I hoped would at least provoke some sort of response from somebody... all to no avail. Sometimes I wonder why I continue to post as much as I do. Just another awesome mystery to me...

And then, low and behold, someone responds to this silly little question ~ the one with all the errors!

Here's the deal: I was dutifully reading a book by John Ortberg this morning in preparation for an upcoming study session with some friends. Then I read TimberWolf's latest post. Then I checked out his reference link. Then a bunch of dots began to connect for me. Then I got to seriously thinking about how the most outragiously mysterious processes can happen in our souls when we relax within ourSELF, let go of OUR agendas and let the Holy Spirit take the helm. OMG, sweet relief!

I'm sitting here thinking that TimberWolf has no idea of how his little post today resonates with and ties together so many things I've been thinking about lately. Thing is, none of us have much of an idea as to when and how anything we do or say may be used by the Holy Spirit to help fulfil His dreams for us and/or someone else.

This is why I believe it is helpful to post, or talk, or journal, or DO something so that we are able to keep this, our mission in life, going. By asking the questions we all have OUT LOUD, by taking a minute to respond to someone else's circumstances by DOING something, we never know how our behavior or our circumstance may be used by Him to bless.

Thank you, TimberWolf, for stepping up to the plate so often. You pay attention, you seek, you think, and, you share your enthusiasm for being part of His dream.

I hope that someone else, someone who's been watching from the sidelines for awhile perhaps, takes the bold step of sharing something here. Truth of it is, probably the less profound the post... the more chances that it may have a profound impact on the life of someone else. Just never know. No fear.
