The Lord Is My Shepherd - Psalm 23, the Shepherd Psalm

Psalm 23 is the most well-known and beloved Psalm in Scripture.
The power of the Shepherd Psalm is that it speaks of the fears and hopes of all persons, as well as what God does in the lives of His faithful in the midst of life's adversities.

God Is a Capable Shepherd of His People

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
God provides all of our needs. We will also say in our hearts “I do not want”, if we understand our life circumstances as they truly are.

The Shepherd Guides Us and Cares for Us

He makes me lie down in green pastures … He leads me beside still waters.

The Shepherd guides His sheep to quiet havens that will sustain us. We can drink deeply and rest in God.

He restores my soul
The Shepherd tends His sheep with care and makes sure they are refreshed and ready for the next part of the journey ahead. David is praying many things in Psalm 23, laying hold of these promises by affirming them in worship to the LORD. We can do the same!

The Paths of the Lord Are Safe

He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake … Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me
The LORD doesn't lead us into any place He doesn't want us to be or that is for our ultimate harm.
God is always with us, watching over our steps, making sure we do not walk into destruction. God will lead us into all righteousness, if we listen to His voice and follow Him closely.

The Shepherd is our Protector and Redeemer

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
The image of the rod that protects the sheep from predators.
No wolf in sheep's' clothing, no trial or doubt, nor even Satan the enemy of us all, can take us from the fold through violence or deception.

The staff is the instrument that rescues us from dangers we could fall into if we are not careful.
A long, crook-ended staff that a shepherd would have could lift a fallen lamb from the many crags and precipices of the rough lands that the sheep sometimes had to go through. God's staff is the promise of redemption. The Son of God, Jesus the good Shepherd saves.

The God Who Is Shepherd Blesses His Followers

You prepare a table before me...

Whether in the current age or the age to come, we will be vindicated in front of our enemies – the enemies of God's people. His anointing oil is the sign and seal of our salvation and kingship in Christ. We are sealed forever with the oil of the Spirit. God's overflowing blessings fill our hearts.

Thank Our God, The Shepherd of Goodness and Mercy!

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

God wants good things for His sheep. It is only because of the undeserved favor of our loving LORD, by His grace and mercy, that we shall have eternal life with Him! Ultimately He will bless us with the riches of New Heavens and a New Earth and our rulership with Christ in the eon to come.

I am looking forward to the eternal pastures of peace!
